What’s Hiding Beneath the Surface? The Science Behind Cold Process Soap 🫧💜
There’s something almost mesmerizing about watching freshly poured soap batter move. The colors swirl together, oils shimmer across the surface, and for a few moments, everything looks fluid and almost effortless.
But what you’re seeing in this video is much more than a pretty swirl.
You’re watching chemistry happen in real time.
From Oils to Real Soap
Every handcrafted cold process soap begins with a carefully selected combination of oils and/or butters. Each ingredient is chosen for what it contributes to the finished bar from bubbly lather and hardness to creaminess and conditioning qualities.
Then comes the ingredient that makes the transformation possible: sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye.
When the lye solution is combined with the oils, a chemical reaction called saponification begins.
During saponification, the fats in the oils react with sodium hydroxide and are transformed into soap and naturally occurring glycerin.
So while the surface of that freshly poured batch may look like nothing more than swirling oils and beautiful colors, the ingredients are already beginning their transformation into something completely new.
And that transformation doesn’t stop when I put down the camera.
Over the hours that follow, the soap continues to saponify and becomes firm enough to remove from the mold and cut into individual bars.
And cutting day is one of my favorite parts because that’s when we finally get to see what was hiding beneath the surface. 👀✨
With swirls and other fluid designs, even I don’t know exactly what every bar will look like until that first cut. That’s part science, part artistry, and a whole lot of fun.
Why Does Handmade Soap Have to Cure?
Once the soap is cut, it still isn’t ready to head straight to your shower.
My cold process bars are given time to cure for several weeks.
During the curing process, excess water gradually evaporates from the bars. This helps create a harder, longer-lasting bar and allows the soap to reach its best performance before it makes its way to you.
It’s one of the hardest parts of soapmaking because after seeing a beautiful cut, I want to use it too! 😂 But handmade soap simply can’t be rushed.
Every batch gets the time it needs.
A Little Science + A Little Art 💜
That’s one of the things I love most about making cold process soap.
It’s not simply pouring ingredients into a mold.
There’s chemistry happening. There are temperatures and measurements to consider. There’s formulation and technique. And then there’s the creative side choosing fragrances, colors, designs, swirls and all those little details that make each batch uniquely Ameyzing.
What begins as oils and lye eventually becomes a handcrafted bar that can be part of something as ordinary as your morning shower.
And I think that’s pretty incredible.
